Grammar Day Marches Forth on March 4

Good grammar is sexy. Whoever has coined these wise words must have been riled by a poorly written missive from an admirer. Or it could be that the recipient has gotten so smitten by the written eloquence of the letter sender.  Either way, he or she is a genuine lover of words.

Xlibris Celebrates Grammar Day
Xlibris celebrates and promotes the use of good grammar.

March 4 marks Grammar Day, which started in the US in 2008. This offbeat holiday was established by Martha Brockenbrough, an author and the founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar. She and fellow writers are celebrating a week-long event “about why we honor good grammar.”

Why is good grammar sexy? Lisa McLendon, a.k.a. Madam Grammar, couldn’t have said it any better.

“If you know a little bit about linguistics and grammar, you are a more savvy media consumer, you can spot hedging or weaknesses in arguments, and you are aware of how people can mislead through language. On the more positive side, you understand why a well-written sentence works, how to find ‘just the right word,’ and how English got to be the glorious muddle it is today.”
