Author V Leigh Talks about Her Sheer Love of Writing – Part 1

What drives you to write? Writers have different motives for writing. Iconic author George Orwell has revealed in his essay titled Why I Write that a writer is not merely driven by the desire to share his gift of words to entertain readers and has laid out what he calls 4 motives for writing.

Xlibris Book Precocious
Author V Leigh shares her sheer love of writing that has begun since childhood. Her book “Precocious” is a testimony to this love.

For Xlibris Author V Leigh, however, it is her sheer love of writing that drives her to pursue the craft. Xlibris presents V Leigh’s musings as a writer, revealed here on the Xlibris Blog.

A logophile since childhood

I’ve loved doodling since I was a very little girl. The gratifying, rote feel of a pen, pencil or crayola in my tiny hand even way back then, gave me such pure satisfaction. I could feel any angst waft upward, vacating my body, alleviating any sign of stress attempting to invade my normally well balanced psyche. Of course that was when my truly remarkable mother was still alive. She certainly did well fulfill her maternal, protective lioness station in my life. And how do I know that for sure?

I know that for sure because my once complete childhood tranquility has proven to be incomplete since her transition. I walk around until this very day over 63 years later, still with a yearning, vacant spot inside of my heart for my mother.

My affinity for words was evident early on. If I overheard an unfamiliar word leave an unassuming adult’s mouth,

I’d try to remember it and later ask my mother what it meant. She found that skill fascinating for a 3 year old, and began randomly tossing in a few new words in our otherwise mundane mother-daughter chats, to continue keeping me sharp.

When I first became aware of the syncopated rhythm of words rhyming, it wasn’t long afterwards that songs on the radio caught my ear because of not only, the catchy, melodic tunes, but also the often interesting lyrics. It didn’t take long for my mother to tease me, saying she needed to hurry and teach me how to read, so that I could look up word definitions in “Websters” for myself.

For sure, I loved and appreciated being read to, and by the age of 4 had began reading most basic things by myself. Imagine my delight when I discovered I could also “write”, or print words myself and then string them together to form a complete thought, or sentence on a lined sheet of my maternal grandmother’s 10 cent letter writing tablet. Starting off pretty basic with my name, I eventually wrote my first complete sentence, correct spelling aside. I was told it read, “I luv yu.”

V Leigh talks more about her love of writing in the succeeding sequels of her Xlibris Blog. Read the second part here.
