IBM Computer System Able To Detect Writing Tone

Your words are treasures that you share to your readers. As a writer, however, you have to choose carefully what to share, lest your words come across contrary to your intended message.

Want to know how your readers may perceive your choice of words? IBM’s Watson Tone Analyzer may come in handy.

IBM has developed a question answering computer system called Watson Tone Analyzer that uses “linguistic analysis to detect and interpret emotional, social, and writing cues found in text.” Currently available in experimental mode, the artificial intelligence evaluates content and gives feedback on a given text’s emotional, social, and writing tones.

IBM recommends the computer system for pre-evaluation of emails, presentations or other customer communications, and blog posts. The technology also detects how word choice in any text-based communications could impact readers.

“Such insights can be used for a number of purposes including personal and business communications, self-branding, market research, public relations management and automated contact center management,” said Rama Akkiraju, Distinguished Engineer and Master Inventor at IBM Watson User Technologies.

Watson computer system was developed under IBM’s DeepQA project aimed at creating an artificial intelligence that can accurately respond to natural language questions. The technology was named after IBM’s first CEO Thomas J. Watson. In 2011, Watson competed against former winners on the show “Jeopardy!” and bagged the USD 1-million first prize.
