Xlibris Writing Tips| 4 Resources on Ancient Greece

Xlibris Publishing shares 4 Resources on Ancient Greece. The peoples, cultures, and histories of the northeastern Mediterranean, have been the source of countless stories, books, and writings of all genres. Ancient Greek ideas of democracy and politics have been the source of many modern concepts and approaches of government. Ancient Greek history and myth have provided millennia of writers with more great battles, epic struggles, and legendary figures than a single article can cover. As such, we would find it remiss not to share with authors potential resources regarding the Ancient Greeks, the history, their culture, and their world.

Resource #1 Introducing the Ancient Greeks by Edith Hall

Xlibris Writing Tips| 4 Resources on Ancient Greece
The Parthenon is one of the last standing wonders of the Ancient Greek world.

A modern text and treatise on the history and the culture of the Greeks. Edith Hall expounds on various vital yet obscure aspects of Greek life in addition to central Greek virtues. Much of modern literature focuses on the history surrounding the Ancient Greeks, but Edith Hall goes further by discussing the virtues, values, and worldviews of the Ancient Greeks.

Resource #2 The Illiad and The Odyssey by Homer

The Iliad The Odyssey by Homer, is the epic series of prose detailing the Trojan War and the journey of King Odysseus to return home from said war. Though more myth than actual fact, The Iliad and The Odyssey do provide crucial insight as to the culture, norms, and values of the ancient Greeks.

Resource #3 The Histories by Herodotus

The hoplites and the phalanx were the staples of warfare among the Greek City-States.

The Histories by Herodotus covers the history of the Greek city-state, Athens. This literary and historical classic is highly detailed as it conveys to readers the circumstances and events surrounding Athens’ wars with Persia and later Sparta.

Resource #4 The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization

This documentary series covers the rise and fall of Athens, what some call the center of Ancient Greek culture. Events covered include the formation of democracy in Athens, the wars with the Persian Empire and Sparta, and the death of Socrates. Visuals consist of Greek ruins, Greek art, and well-costumed dramatizations. All beautifully narrated.

  1. Thank you. This is a writing tip I really enjoyed. I have always had a great appreciation for ancient Greece.
Indeed, when I wrote my novel TWO WORLDS, I featured the culture and architecture in an Earth Colony on Mars. I chose Mars to set the scene of my book as Mars is becoming closer to the people of earth with all its rovers, probes and NASA constantly looking for life…or previous life on our nearest celestial neighbour.
TWO WORLDS tells the story of many abductions by an ancient alien race living beneath the surface of Mars. This race is a fragile, peaceful race intent of keeping their existence a secret….henceforth, anyone who accidentally comes across them on their visitations to Earth are abducted and taken to an Earth Colony modeled after ancient Greece. So…when reading this book, people could well wonder where the missing people of Earth have gone…..and why these ancient Aliens living on Mars have a fascination for ancient Greek culture.
