Xlibris Good News – Summer 2016

Xlibris Publishing wants to share some Good News from the recent couple of months. This past season has seen an interesting mix of books, with topics ranging from grand wilderness adventure to historical exploration, from playground bullies to blue elephants. In addition, an Xlibris author has made it onto the finalists list for the 2016 Eric Hoffer Award.

Lane R. Warenski shares an epic tale of man versus the wild. Follow Zach Connors as he braves the wild, untamed Rocky Mountains in the 1820s. He is alone, his father having just been killed by a grizzly bear, save for a faithful dog named Jimbo. Follow this young man as he finds life, family, and a name, that of the eponymous Grizzly Killer. From Eva Poluha and Elehu Feleke we have Thinking Outside the Box, an exploratory attempt to answer the paradox of Ethiopia’s poor economy despite its wealth of resources. Jacqueline Watkins tells the story of Bobby, the new kid at Sunnybrook Elementary School. Bobby quickly comes to the attention of Tully the Bully, making it hard for Bobby to enjoy the playground. In this children’s book, Jacqueline Watkins shares how Bobby both overcomes his bully and befriends him.  Shivi Darubra tackles self-esteem issues in young children with her book The Little Blue Elephant, where a young elephant named Ellie learns how to be a better friend to her pals Roo and Leo.

To top off this season’s good news, Michael Herrick was a finalist for the 2016 Eric Hoffer Award with his novel Walking Home: via the Appalachian Trail.

Eric Hoffer Award Finalist 2016

Xlibris Publishing is very proud to announce that Walking Home: via the Appalachian Trail by Michael Herrick was named as a finalist for 2016 Eric Hoffer Award.

About the Award

Walking Home by Michael HerrickThe Eric Hoffer Award was founded and launched internationally on January 1st 2001 in honor of the American writer and philosopher Eric Hoffer, and since then has grown into one of the largest and widely recognized international book awards for small, academic, or independent presses. The award commemorates the memory of the famous author by bringing attention to exceptional writing as well celebrating the spirit of independent publishing. Winners of the Eric Hoffer award enjoy prizes, honors, and worldwide media exposure.

About the Author

The author, Michael Herrick—former teacher, happily married, fit, and optimistic—learned from experience that the Appalachian Trail has as many stories as miles. But the best story is one of self-knowledge, which is hard to come by. When you are walking all day long with your thoughts, your life passes before your eyes—doubts, joys, regrets, and plans—all turned over and around until something good comes from it. Though this story takes place on the two-thousand-plus miles of the Appalachian Trail, it is not about the trail.

About the Book

Walt, a middle-aged man, follows the twenty-year-old journal of a hike on the Appalachian Trail by a younger man, Strider, who had undertaken the trek to discover the “good life” and quit to pursue it. Since Walt’s good life with his wife and daughters has gone sour, he starts this walk to think about his future. On the way Walt reflects on Strider’s memorable encounters and plunges into his own life-changing experiences, leaving him lost and uncertain about doing the right thing. He learns that when you go down into the woods one day, you’re in for a big surprise.
