Recent News- Women Writers are Bestsellers of 2017

A recent article by the Guardian shares the top 10 bestsellers of 2017. All of whom, with only a single exception, are female.

 

Recent News- Women Writers are Bestsellers of 2017Rising to the top of 2017 is Margaret Atwood. The author of The Handmaid’s Tale and Alias Grace, Margaret Atwood has been identified as the bestselling novelist within the genre of literary fiction for the year 2017. Television adaptations of her novels helped to push sales of her books up to £2.8 million.

 

Sarah Perry, the author of The Essex Serpent, took second place with book sales reaching up to  £1.6 million. Third place was claimed after death by the late Helen Dunmore. Her works include the novel The Birdcage Walk and the poetry collection Inside the Wave, which together make up sales of £1.1 million. Fourth and fifth place went to Naomi Alderman, author of the prize-winning The Power, and Elena Ferrante, author of the The Neapolitan series, respectively.

 

Sixth place goes to the only male writer among 2017’s top ten bestsellers, Haruki Murakami,whose book sales in 2017 reached approximately £1 million. The remaining bestselling authors of 2017 include Ali Smith, Zadie Smith, Maggie O’Farrell, and  Arundhati Roy.
