David Pliner, SHORT, SHORT TALES

Xlibris Publishing introduces David Pliner, author of SHORT, SHORT TALES.

Tell us a little bit about your book.  What inspired you to write it?

Short, Short Tales by David PlinerThe book is comprised eleven short stories.  The first story Hogan’s Choice is about an everyday man who struggles to survive, partially due to his own faults and to circumstances beyond his control.  There are eleven different subjects covered in this 11-page story, ranging from empire building to unrequited love.  The other stories are about justice, animals, religion, nostalgia and the supernatural.  The stories are short and can be read quickly. Some are funny, nostalgic, tragic, but all deal with everyday life.  I was inspired to write it by personal experience with the characters and events involved.

What 5 things have you learned about self-publishing?

  1. Know your material
  2. Get it organized
  3. Say what you mean and want to convey to the reader without editorial interference
  4. Write for yourself, not for other people.  If what you write is good, people will read it.
  5. Try to limit the number of people you work with.  This has been a problem, as one person doesn’t always know what the person or people before have done.

What do you love most about self-publishing and would you recommend it to other authors?

If you are a new author, like me, you have to stick your feet in the water to test it.  Anyone can write, but not everyone has talent.  Talent cannot be taught.  Your first foray will tell you if you have the talent to proceed.  I’m still in the discovery mode.  I hope I have the talent.  Unless you have the money to hire professional advisors, self-publishing is the only economical way to go.

What’s your favorite social media for marketing and promotions?

Directing your promotions and writing to groups, clubs, etc. you are affiliated with.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Know your material and research before writing.  Don’t be afraid to approach subjects because you feel readers might or might not like what you have written.  Write what you believe and stick to it.
