Xlibris Publishing introduces Shawn Gale, author of World of Dawn: Arise.
About the book
World of Dawn: Arise is book one of my young-adult sci-fi/fantasy series, World of Dawn. Without spoiling too much, it’s the story of a group of troubled teens– three boys, two girls– that end up being sucked through a rift in time and space, where they then find themselves on another world. This motley group, with radically different personalities, must work together to survive. What follows is a journey to find a way home, a journey that becomes a quest to save a world.
About the Author
I am a graduate of the Fraser Valley Writers School and Humber College’s School for Writers, where I earned a Letter of Distinction. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing from Bircham International University. I was a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Creative Writing Department from 2014-2017. My stories have been published in periodicals and anthologies in the U.S. and Canada. My acclaimed story collection, The Stories That Make Us, was short-listed as a top-three finalist for the Whistler Independent Book Award. I’m the author of the World of Dawn Series and can be reached via my website, www.shawngale.com, or on Facebook: Shawn Gale- author.
Over the years, I’ve been inspired by myriad authors, by classic to contemporary works, and by genre to literary fiction. If had to pick two authors from literary fiction it would be Joseph Conrad for his memorable characters, raw creative power, and deep psychological insight, as well as Canada’s Michael Ondaatje for his prose, plots, and diversity. With genre fiction, it would be Suzanne Collins for her Hunger Games series. Do I really need to qualify this? And the second would be Ken Follett for his suspense, characterization, and prolific output. I need to mention a wild card here: Jim Harrison’s novella trilogy, Legends of the Fall. You might be more familiar with the movie, which is based on one of the three novellas in the book. If you’ve yet to read this book, either go online or to your local used book store and buy this masterpiece.
Inspiration for book
I worked as a peer mentor in a federal prison from 2011 to 2015. I met a lot of colourful characters, and I got to know their personal stories. I myself had a troubled upbringing, so I found myself empathizing deeply with these men. Some were released, only to return; others died from being involved in gangs, drugs, crime, or other unfortunate circumstances. At the same time, I was participating in a restorative justice group, hearing more stories about traumatic upbringings, and learning about alternative sentencing measures. Also around this time I was reading and discussing a Joseph Campbell book, The Power of Myth. It’s a transcribed 1980’s PBS interview between Campbell and Bill Moyer. I was immensely inspired by Campbell’s ideas of myths and the hero’s journey. In 2013 all of these convergent events wormed into me, and shortly after I felt a unique story brewing in the basement, and, as they say, the rest is history.
Working on a Sequel?
The World of Dawn series consists of four books. As noted, World of Dawn: Arise is the first book. I’m currently preparing book two, World of Dawn: Reveal, for production. I’m hoping it will be available by late summer. I’m revising book three, World of Dawn: The Great Reach, and will start writing book four, World of Dawn: Homeward, in the next few months.
Xlibris Publishing will return with Shawn Gale in Part 2.
